Just Us Books is the nation's premier independent publisher of Black-interest books for young people. Our list of titles includes picture books, chapter books for middle readers, poetry, non-fiction series, biographies and young adult fiction. Our books focus primarily on the culture, history and contemporary experiences of African Americans.

MANUSCRIPTS
 
Just Us Books is currently accepting queries for picture books, chapter books and middle reader titles only. 
 
What we are looking for:
* fiction and nonfiction manuscripts 
* realistic, contemporary characters * compelling plot lines that introduce conflict and resolution (Please consider the targeted age) * high-interest readability * cultural authenticity
 

To submit a manuscript for consideration, please send only the following:
* a query letter pitching us your manuscript
* 1-2 page synopsis of your manuscript
* 3-5 sample pages of your manuscript
* a brief author bio that includes any previously published work
* self-addressed stamped envelope for our written response

MARIMBA BOOKS

Marimba Books is a multicultural children's book imprint that publishes board books, picture books, chapter books and books for middle readers. Marimba Books was established to produce books for children that reflect our country's diversity and these titles include settings ranging from a bustling urban millennial block party in NYC to rural Georgia in 1937; from cobblestone streets in New Orleans' French Quarter to a community park in the suburbs. Marimba Books aims not only to entertain, but to educate and empower as well.      

Marimba Books is currently accepting queries for picture books  only. We are not considering chapter books, y/a, poetry or any other types of manuscripts at this time.
            
What we are looking for:
* fiction and nonfiction manuscripts

Please do not send unsolicited manuscripts. We do not accept nor will we be held responsible for unsolicited manuscripts. Just Us Books and Marimba Books do not respond to queries sent via e-mail, fax or phone. Such queries will not receive a response. All queries must be sent by mail only. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, our editorial department is unable to verify receipt of a query, or status of a submission. Receipt verification must be done via certified mail, Federal Express, UPS or other similar services.
 
If we are interested in your manuscript or art sample, you can expect to receive a written response from us within 12-14 weeks.  If you do not hear from us within six months, you may assume that your work does not fit our immediate needs. We are not able to return manuscripts or provide a personal response to each submission. All submissions are considered non-returnable.
 
ART/ILLUSTRATIONS
Please send tear sheets along with your digital portfolio and/or Instagram address via MAIL only at the addresses listed above. 
      
We encourage previously unpublished writers and artists to research publishing and how to get started in the industry. A wealth of information is available through trade journals such as Publishers Weekly, SCBWI and the Authors Guild. Please also take advantage of continuing education courses, writing workshops, and publishing seminars offered by organizations such as Kweli Journal. You may also find helpful information through the Children's Book Council, www.cbcbooks.org.
